Procedure to prepare in Ayurvedam the "Choornams" - Powders

"Kashayamulu" - Decoctions
"Lehyams" -Ghee Incorporated Medicines
"Gruthms" - Ghee Incorporated Medicines Sweetened Preparations.

Method of preparation of powders in Ayurveda called "Choornamulu"

  1. Collect only fresh ingredients in the required quantity.
  2. For an individual patient home preparation of medicine is OK.
  3. For bulk go for machinery manufacture in a reputed Ayurvedic Pharma Industry.
  4. Put them in Mortar and hand pound them with a long wooden pestle with iron ferrule in the bottom and when powder is ready strain it by palms of hands through a dry cotton cloth tied to a clean stainless steel container of wide mouth.
  5. Powder should be preserved in clean glass bottles.

Method of preparation of "Decoctions" in Ayurveda called "RASAMULU".

  1. Take suitable stainless steel vessel for small quantity of medicine preparation. For large quantities go by the method advised above.
  2. Take Ingredients and powder them. They are called "Kwatha Choornam"
  3. Transfer it into 16 volumes of clean water in vessel explained in Para one above. Steam boil till volume remains 8th of original volume.
  4. The following 7 types are described in Ayurvedam.

  5. i) "Paachanamu" - Boiling with ingredients till 1/2 Volume should remain
    ii) "Depanamu" - 1/10th volume should remain
    iii) "Shodanamu" - 1/2th volume should remain
    iv) "Shamnakash" - 1/8th volume should remain
    v) "Tarpanamu" - Near to equal quantity.
    vi) "Kledanamu" - 1/4th of volume should remain
    vii) "Shoshanamu" - 1/16th volume remain
What for they are used:
  1. 1st One - To eliminate symptoms of a disease.
  2. Such a decoction is used.
  3. 2nd one - To improve appetite.
  4. 3rd One - To have a purgative effect
  5. 4th One - To alleviate symptoms of a disease
  6. 5th One - To keep up well being
  7. 6th One - To reduce main symptoms
  8. 7th One - To reduce the body weight in edematous conditions at page 198, 199, 200 "Vydya yoga Ratnavali".

Preparation of "Lehyams" it means sweetened Medicinal preparation appears and to be used by chewing like any pasty preparation (at page 219 "Vydya Yoga Ratnavali")

To make such an Ayurvedic Medicine collect as per formula like following materials:
i) Powder of all ingredients in quantities specified in the formula.
ii) Jaggery should be one year old only to be used.
iii) Sugar without contaminants large crystals
iv) Honey or
v) Cow Milk or
vi) Cow's Ghee or
vii) All of three above mentioned.

  1. The powder should be of very fine quality.
  2. Better to use stainless steel vessels as earthern may be broken
  3. Take all liquid preparation except honey first in the vessel and steam boil very slowly for a little time.
  4. Continue to boil; add powder slowly by large spoon so than it will not remain as above.
  5. Mix thoroughly.
  6. Add honey only when the preparation is ready after cooking, when cool only.
  7. Preserve in suitable containers and use as directed by the physician.

PREPARATION OF "GRUTHAMS" means in Ayurveda Cows Ghee Based "Halwa Like" preparation:

The chief difference between "Lehyam & Grutham" is in "Lehyam" it will take all of the cooked ingredients just like sweet preparation.

Whereas in "Grutham" - after cooking it is filtered through a cloth so that all ingredients are out only Ghee is used as medicine. Otherwise cooking process is almost same as above. The Properties of Ingredients are conveyed to Grutham - or Ghee based preparation.
